Scum - Redux / Remix
UK ONLY ORDERS
Pop Threat split up quite a long time ago. They barely made it into 2003 before deciding to end the band, following a shambolic gig at The Moles Club in Bath. They left behind a small discography of just four 7" singles, one EP, a couple of compilation appearances, and the full length album, Scum.
Scum was originally released just after the band split, on Mook Records. Nobody was around to promote it at the time. It was a raw sounding collection of tracks, mixed in such a way that the end result could be ideally described as "soupy". Vocals were pushed down into the fuzziness, the bass was distorted, the album sounded (for the most part) as if it had been dipped in sonic gunge......or "Scum", if you will. This was taking the kind of production you might hear on an old Pussy Galore or Sonic Youth recording as an influence, but instead of applying the rough and abrasive clatter of guitars, the Pop Threat album turned those guitars into mush - being fed through broken fuzz pedals. Someone described it, at the time, as "cheaply recorded shoegaze without sophistication. The results are nullifying". Anyway....fast forward to 2016. We always thought there was a different sounding album in there, somewhere. We just had to take the tracks and remix them in order to prove that theory. So, that's exactly what we've done. All 12 original recordings from the Scum album, totally remixed and "de-scummed". It's the same album as before....but totally different. It's now brighter, clearer, yet still lo-fi and rough around the edges (those essential ingredients)
With this release of the Pop Threat - Scum CD, Squirrel Records come full circle.....and to a close. Pop Threat were the first band on Squirrel Records in 2001, and even though this album was not originally a Squirrel Records release, we think it's a fitting end to the label to make Pop Threat the final band on Squirrel Records in 2016.......
[ALL SOLD OUT] The first 100 copies only of this album will come with a bonus live CD, "Testify To The Baby Jesus". 2 performances from Pop Threat. Live at The Railway Inn, Winchester on 19th July 2002, and the no doubt soon to be legendary (if it wasn't already) final Bath Moles performance from 10th January 2003, in all of its uncut glory....which is less of a gig, and more of an absolute drunken mess. The part where Chris Shake from The Real Losers jumps on stage is a definite highlight.........
